History

The Discovery Shooting Club (DSC) had its beginnings in 1999 at Elliston, NL. It started with the idea to have a .22 rifle shooting event in conjunction with a local folk festival. A permit was obtained and an abandoned gravel pit, that later became our range, was selected as a safe site. That shoot was quite successful and was later formalized as the Peter Tucker Memorial Shooting Challenge that ran for fourteen years. After that first event interest in a permanent shooting range grew rapidly and with local cooperation the club officially opened in late 2002. As the years went by incremental improvements were made including a covered firing line, tables, and addition shooting lanes. We became a community partner working with other local organizations and town council.

In 2014 we made an addition to our club consisting of new 45m shooting position. While this is not unusual for a gun club ours is in the form a replica trench from the First World War including duck boards and sandbags. It was built above ground and unlike many replicas live ammunition is regularly fired from it. Not surprisingly it drew some attention and even received a segment on the local tv news (both NTV & CBC).

For our 20th anniversary, in 2022, we wanted to do something special. Many ideas were considered, but we ultimately settled on instituting what became the Elliston Time Capsule. The DSC membership and everyone in the community as well as local organizations were invited to submit letters/photos. It was quite successful with hundreds of images and letters accumulated. The dedication took place on July 1st, 2022, and it is marked with a granite stone that is due to be unearthed on July 1st, 2122.
